Author's Guidelines for Writing and Submitting an Article

Information Security Today provides essential information for managing the security of a modern, evolving enterprise. It is written for information security managers and other technical managers and staff who are the first-line support responsible for the daily, efficient operation of security policies, procedures, standards, and practices. It covers:

  • Computer operations security
  • Application and systems development
  • Business continuity and disaster recovery planning
  • Telecommunications and network security
  • Security architecture and models

  • Law, investigations, and ethics

Article Content
Information Security Today informs its readers of best practices, as well as of research into current and upcoming issues in information security. Articles should take a how-to approach to the their topics. They should help readers solve problems and be applicable to on-the-job situations faced everyday by IT, information security, and networking and system administration professionals. Case studies are always welcomed.

Review Process and Acceptance Policy
The journal publishes articles from a wide variety of authors, each requiring its own type of review process.

Unsolicited Articles. All articles that have been submitted but have not been solicited for publication undergo a review process by an in-house editor. The review process usually takes one to two weeks.

In most cases, authors of unsolicited manuscripts are asked to revise their manuscripts. Revising a manuscript does not guarantee its acceptance for publication, and an author may be asked for further revisions.

Solicited Articles. Because the journal publishes issues focusing on special themes, its editors do solicit articles from generally recognized experts on these themes. These articles are read by the in-house and consulting editor and in most cases accepted without revision for publication.

Article Format

  • Feature articles should be between 3,000 and 6,000 words with each figure or table counted as 300 words.
  • Please make sure that the text is doubled-spaced and in 12-point Times Roman.
  • Use heads and subheads in text. Place <A> by main heads, <B> or <C> by subheads.
  • Footnotes and references should appear at the end of the article, using only information that is less than three years old.
  • Please do not include references in the article text (e.g., [LIV 99]).
  • Keep acronyms and abbreviations to a minimum and define those that do appear in the article.

Auerbach respects the work of all the authors whose articles it publishes. However, Auerbach does edit all articles to conform to its editing and style requirements.

Art & Graphics
Art and graphics should be submitted both in high-resolution hard copy and electronic format. Each piece of art must be placed in its own electronic file; do not place or embed art and graphics in text. Please include [Insert Figure XX here] following the paragraph mentioning the graphic in the text. Include a caption for each figure and table.

The simpler a graphic is, the more readable and understandable it will reproduce on the printed page.

Acceptable formats are Adobe Illustrator (.ai), Microsoft Visio (.vsd), Adobe Photoshop (.psd), .gif, .jpg, .tif, or .pdf (set to the highest level of resolution).

Line art: Create line art in either Adobe Illustrator or Microsoft Visio. Art that reproduces best is in black and white only; avoid using gray and shadowing, especially behind text. Do not use colors; make sure that your manuscript does not refer to colored lines or areas. Keep text to a minimum: 12 pt. Arial on an 8 x 11 page is the ideal proportion for reproduction.

Continuous tone art: Scan art that is a photograph or contains continuous tones into Adobe Photoshop at a resolution of 360 dpi or higher.

Copyright & Permissions
Most authors assign copyright to their articles to Auerbach Publications. In general, Auerbach grants permission to reprint articles. Request for reprint permission must be submitted in writing. If you plan to use graphics or tables from another publication, you must secure reprint permission from the appropriate publisher. Such permission is also needed for quotes of 50 words or more, or more than 400 words of material quoted from one source. Auerbach can supply you with reprint permission release forms.

Biographical Sketch
Manuscripts accepted for publication should be accompanied by a brief biographical sketch for each author. Biographical information should be stated in the following order: current position, technical interests, highest academic degree, degree-granting institution, professional affiliations, e-mail address.

Submitting an Article
Articles can be submitted as e-mail attachments or they can be mailed as hardcopy with accompanying PC-compatible diskette in Microsoft Word.
